Why Euthanize?

It's the subject no one wants to discuss.  It causes a wide range of emotions, from grief to peacefulness.  Those involved  may use reflection, prayer, or meditation to get through it.

It's euthanasia.  Not a pleasant topic but one that horse owners will likely encounter and need to consider at some point. Rescues like us deal with it often because an owner wouldn't.  We get it. We're here to save lives but sometimes euthanasia is what's best for the horse. It's tough. But here's a bit of info to get you thinking about it:

Why euthanize?  There are generally 3 situations.

 1. Sudden and serious injury or illness.  A broken leg or colic. Is it time?

 2. Steady decline. Your 29 year old mare can't hold her weight and struggles to rise from her daily nap.  Is it time?

 3. Dangerous. Your gelding pins his ears and aggressively attacks each time you come near.  He almost killed your vet when she attempted to draw blood. Is it time?

No one can make that decision but you. There are plenty of great resources on the internet, but the best place to begin is with your vet. Have the honest and painful conversations now. And do what's right for the horse.
